Chapter 4 – Choosing a power technique

Only the second floor and above held literature pertaining to martial study. The library pavilion was altogether divided into five floors: inside the first floor were some books for people to read in their free time, inside the second floor were some basic, elementary martial techniques, inside the third floor were intermediate martial techniques, inside the fourth floor, were advanced martial techniques; and finally the top floor, the fifth floor held the Yi Yuan school’s few number of Xiantian level martial techniques.

After all these years, Ye Xiwen did not even know the name of this old man, everyone simply called him Elder Mo. Although his identity was unknown, he was still a senior inside the Yi Yuan school, thus every time Ye Xiwen saw him, he was very respectful towards Elder Mo.

“Oh, youngster Ye is here? What book did you come to read? A piece of classical history, or perhaps geography?” Elder Mo, putting down his book, remarked with a friendly and amiable smile. His impression of Ye Xiwen was not bad at all. Not only modest and polite, but more importantly, people who were willing to spend time and calm their minds by reading nowadays were very few. The younger generation all seemed to be extremely rash and impatient.

“Elder Mo, I am here today to borrow a book pertaining to martial arts,” Ye Xiwen declared.

“Martial arts?” Elder Mo’s eyes flashed an indescribable radiance, “You crossed to the fourth stage?”

“Not bad, not bad, hahaha!” Elder Mo laughed heartily without restraint, truly treating Ye Xiwen as a nephew.

“Since you came here to choose a martial technique, never forget that on the path of studying martial arts you must by all means avoid being greedy, thus you must make sure that the technique you choose is compatible with you, for your own good.” Elder Mo replied. Although, he would say that to every disciple who came here to choose secret books. With Ye Xiwen, he was actually exceptionally serious.

Many young people, when they first start out always want to learn this and that, were unable to pay attention to a single topic. Some people were even led to believe themselves of exceptionally high natural talent, and would be able to learn everything. The outcome of these attempts could only be said to be akin to trying to paint a tiger but ending up with a dog, barely learning anything with that kind of superficial mindset. In their case, they were much worse than the disciples who wisely chose to specialize in one specific martial art in their sect.

“Many thanks for Elder Mo’s reminder, this youngster will definitely keep it in mind!” Ye Xiwen believed Elder Mo’s words to be very deep and correct, and furthermore bowed deeply to express thanks.

Practicing martial arts was like reading a book. It was impossible to reach the heavens in a single bound. You could not master an art simply by practicing it once, nor could you gain everything a book had to offer by simply reading through it once. Before, when reading, Ye Xiwen’s policy was to absorb everything he possibly could from the book before starting to read a new one. Like this, it may be possible for others to finish several books in the time that it takes Ye Xiwen to finish one. However, at the same time Ye Xiwen’s understanding and comprehension would be much greater and more meaningful than those who chose to rush through their books.

“Well, this old man won’t say anymore, go in and take a look.” Elder Mo waved his hand, laid on his rocking chair, picked up his book and started to read once more.

Ye Xiwen entered into the library pavilion. He had long before already concluded that this Elder Mo’s identity was deep and immeasurable. What kind of place was the Yi Yuan school’s library pavilion? How could they casually send out any old man to protect it without any other guards at all? it  However, since Ye Xiwen was anxious to find out about this world’s state of affairs, every time he came and went, he would not pay much attention to the old man. As a result, he never did inspect Elder Mo’s cultivation very closely. However, looking now, he still appeared to be the same ordinary old man, but how could an ordinary old man possibly be sent to over to protect the library pavilion all by himself? This indicated only one possibility, that the high ranking elders in the Yi Yuan sect placed a great deal of trust in Elder Mo, and that Elder Mo’s strength was so high to the degree that Ye Xiwen was simply unable to discern it right now.

In addition, it was easy to presume that he was a considerably important elder, but then why would he, an important elder with a high status, be willing to guard over the library pavilion? Even though the library pavilion in the Yi Yuan school was a very important place, in the end it didn’t have much real power.

But Ye Xiwen did not think too much about it. In any case, he was not an enemy. On the contrary, Elder Mo had an unusually good opinion of him.

The Yi Yuan school’s library pavilion’s collection of books were many, but neatly organized and categorically put away. Among the many categories, foundation and Xiantian level martial arts had the least amount of books, the reason being that Xiantian level martial techniques were hard to obtain, and not many foundation level techniques were needed. Fist techniques, palm techniques, leg techniques, having a few of these techniques would be just fine. After all, they were merely used for building your foundation. Genuinely confronting an enemy in the future, the probability of using foundation martial arts was very low. Even when strengthening your body you would not use them a lot.

For foundation martial arts, grasping just a few would be just fine, nothing more than just a few sword foundation techniques or fist foundation techniques or the like.

Therefore, Ye Xiwen’s sights were set mainly towards the elementary martial techniques. Among the elementary martial techniques, the one that he remembered the most vividly was without a doubt the Rushing Thunder Hand, due to his elder brother, Ye Feng, cultivating the Rushing Thunder Hand before. The Rushing Thunder Hand had left a deep, profound impression on Ye Xiwen. The technique’s maximum speed was quick, extraordinarily quick, and the power was also extraordinarily great. Though it may be only an elementary martial technique, by practicing it to an extremely fine level, the power that this technique could exhibit was nothing like the power of an elementary martial technique. Those who practiced the Rushing Thunder Hand to the pinnacle would have every punch trigger nine rumbling thunder sounds, this was the Nine Rushed Thundering Echoes.

Ye Xiwen did not linger on the first floor, and directly went up to the second floor, only seeing a thin visible membrane on the staircase between the second and first floor. Ye Xiwen penetrated through, only feeling a slight resistance obstructing him, but overall he still went up very smoothly.

Ye Xiwen knew that this membrane was specifically placed here to prevent those disciples who had not yet reached the Houtian fourth stage but insisted on learning techniques. Although he came up with no difficulty, Ye Xiwen knew that this membrane was ingeniously designed. Those having the Houtian fourth stage or higher would not be impeded. Those without the strength of the Houtian fourth stage could not go up no matter what.

Ye Xiwen was very interested in the Rushing Thunder Hand technique and quickly found it. Looking at it’s description, the technique’s greatest characteristic was without a doubt its unbreakable speed.

Ye Xiwen set his heart on learning this technique. Opening the Rushing Thunder Hand secret manuscript and memorising the contents. The secret books and manuscripts inside the library pavilion were not allowed to be taken out, but you could copy it. Ye Xiwen did not bring over a pen and paper, but memorising was also permitted. Even if you did copy everything from the manuscript, you would still have to memorize all the content later on while practicing the technique. Therefore many people simply chose to memorize the contents of the manuals while they were there.

In less than half an hour Ye Xiwen memorised the book so thoroughly that he could recite every word from it. Afterwards, he put down the Rushing Thunder Hand secret manual. He didn’t continue to read, instead went down the stairs and exited out of the library pavilion.

Elder Mo was still leisurely looking at the ancient book. Seeing Ye Xiwen come out, he smiled and said: “Did you choose well?”

Ye Xiwen nodded and spoke: “En, this youngster chose the “Rushing Thunder Hand”!”

“Rushing Thunder Hand?” That secret manuscript is pretty good.” Elder Mo said, “The power of that technique is also not bad at all. Only, it is a palm technique manuscript. You must find an opportunity to choose a weaponry secret manuscript, otherwise when you are fighting with people you will more or less suffer!”

“En!” Ye Xiwen nodded.

“If you want to specialise cultivating other palm or fist techniques and the like, at the very least cultivate the ‘Rushing Thunder Hand’ to produce six echoes or more. A variety of martial arts are not equal to a specialised one. The truth of biting off more than you can chew, I think you know.”

“Many thanks for Elder Mo’s pointers!” Ye Xiwen said, “If there’s nothing else this youngster will be off first!”

“You may go!” Elder Mo looked at Ye Xiwen and declared, immediately proceeding to read his ancient yellowing book again, laying on his rocking chair with a relaxed appearance just like before, paying no more attention to Ye Xiwen.

Ye Xiwen knew the old elder was always like this. Not taking offense, he turned around and returned to his courtyard.
